Persepolis

Satrapi/Paronnaud, France/USA, 2007, 96 minutes

Based on the hugely successful graphic novel by French-Iranian Marjane Satrapi, Persopolis is an autobiographical glimpse into the world of revolutionary Iran.

Growing up within a family of Marxist intellectuals Marjane is encouraged by her parents and wonderfully headstrong grandmother to grow up independent and opinionated. However, she is dangerously outspoken is sent abroad to Vienna for a better life. However, Marjane finds that her new experiences from romance to making friends can also be tricky, if exciting.

Oscar nominated in the best animated film category for its original and innovative animation. Its simple black and white 2D adds atmosphere and drama to the film, as well as looking simply beautiful.

This film manages to be political but funny and, even though Marjane goes through horrible times you at least know that, in the end she ends up writing an amazing graphic novel and ultimately gets a film made. Which is pretty exciting after all.
