Edinburgh University Film Society was founded in the early 60's by a small group of enthusiasts who screened films in a room in Appleton Tower. The Film Society movement itself began in the 1930's as a way of letting film fans see films which had limited outlets in the UK. Over the years filmsoc has grown in size and stature, winning several awards along the way, with several members of previous committees going on to greater things.
Actually, we're not sure if the Film Society really did start that way, but that seems to be the most common belief. If you have a better idea, please let us know.
